Ophthalmology 1 (Nursing) 2025

This course introduces the student to the specialty of ophthalmic nursing. The assessment and management of clients with ophthalmic disorders requires an in-depth understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eye. This course examines client assessment within the context of ocular diseases and emphasises the importance of assessment for planning and evaluating care. Clinical management and pharmacological interventions are explored and the implications for nursing practice is examined.  Students are expected to critically engage with research evidence and apply it to problem solving and clinical reasoning

Ophthalmology 2 (Nursing) 2025

This course further develops the nurse’s competence in managing clients with ophthalmic disorders across the lifespan.  There will be a strong focus on Vitreo/retinal disease pathways and management. The student will explore the management of patients having posterior segment eye surgery. Common surgical procedures will be the focus using the principles of speciality practice: perioperative. Ophthalmic emergencies are studied and the role of the nurse in managing these critical incidents. Taking a holistic approach Co-morbidities such as diabetes and other vascular /inflammatory diseases will be discussed and the implications for eye health.  Pivotal to the nurses’ role is health promotion and education and this will be explored from both a local, national, and international perspective. The student is expected to critically engage with research evidence and apply it to problem solving and clinical reasoning.
